money; coins (money)
Description
An account of the resource
This coin, struck during the beginning of the reign of Emperor Hadrian, pictures a portrait of the general turned emperor crowned with a laurel on the obverse. Fitting for an emperor that spent half his rule outside of Rome, the reverse shows the goddess Fortuna Redux holding her customary cornucopia and boat’s rudder attached to a globe. Fortuna Redux is responsible for overseeing the return of a long journey, in this case heralding the return of Hadrian to Rome for the first time as emperor after an extended campaign in Syria.

Subject

Description
An account of the resource
Roman Empress Herennia Etruscilla is on the face of the coin, which was minted during her husband, Trajan Decius' reign beginning in 249. Not much is known about her other than that she was the wife of Roman Emperor Decius, and she became Regent of the Roman Empire. Decius is often remembered for persecuting Christians and requiring citizens to sacrifice to the Roman Gods. On the reverse holding a scepter is the seated Goddess Pudicitia, who personifies modesty and chastity, the finest qualities Roman women could possess. Although most popular on Herennias' coins, Pudicitia is common on many coins of imperial women.

Description
An account of the resource
This coin was issued by Titus and there is text that borders the coin on the obverse side that says “Emperator Vespasian". The text borders his father’s head, Emperor Vespasian. Vespasian's fiscal reforms and consolidation of the empire generated political stability and a vast Roman building program. Titus used his father's image to indicate succession. On the reverse side, we see Pax sitting left on a throne, holding an olive branch. Rome experienced great peace during the ruling of Vespsian and Titus, and Pax is used to personify that tranquility.

AR Billion Tetradrachm of Nero

money; coins (money)
Description
An account of the resource
Nero was one of Rome’s most selfish and self-obsessed rulers. He often depicted himself as a god by wearing the sun god Sol’s crown as on this coin. On the back of the coin, the city of Alexandria is personified as Nero. After a great fire, Nero built a palace, the Golden House, over the burnt homes of his citizens. This led to rumors that Nero started the fire, playing his fiddle while half of Rome burned. He was sentenced to death but fled and committed suicide before the trial to avoid public humiliation. His death ended the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

money; coins (money)
Description
An account of the resource
This coin was struck in a moving military mint by Mark Antony. He produced these coins to pay his soldiers. Since high production was required, copper was added, resulting in a low desire to save these coins. Since these coins were heavily circulated they are often found well worn. The obverse of this coin features galley (warship) which shows the military power they had. The reverse side of the coin an eagle with military standards on each side. The eagle represents strength and resilience and is often found on many modern coins.

Description
An account of the resource
Like most Roman Republic coinage, the figures on the obverse are mythological; the twin Dioscuri appear conjoined at the back of the head. These brothers, one mortal and the other divine, were renowned for their horsemanship and thought to protect warriors in battle. It is then hardly a surprise that, on the reverse, Jupiter rides a horse-drawn chariot driven by the personification of Victory. He thrusts a scepter before him, raising a lightning bolt with which to strike down approaching adversaries. These images reflect a clear fixation on military prowess during the expanding and perpetual warring state of the Republic.

Sestertius of Trajan Decius
Subject
The topic of the resource
money; coins (money)
Description
An account of the resource
This coin features a portrait of Trajan Decius, who became Emperor of Rome after killing his predecessor Philip the Arab during a rebellion. Trajan Decius reigned for only two years until he was killed in the Battle of Abritus alongside his son, with whom he co-ruled for one year. Despite his short reign, he wears a laurel wreath crown as a symbol of triumph. The reverse side features a winged figure representing Victory. In its right hand, the figure holds a wreath like the one the emperor wears, with a palm in its left hand, two additional symbols of victory. The victorious imagery does not reflect the era of political turmoil.

A name given to the resource
AE Sestertius of Domitian
Subject
The topic of the resource
money; coins (money)
Description
An account of the resource
Domitian has gotten a bad rep as the paranoid successor of a popular father and brother. He was the second son of emperor Vespasian and the last of the Flavian Dynasty. His 15-year reign was marked by his strengthening of the Roman economy, a building program which included finishing the Colosseum, and defending the empire’s fringes. The face on this coin is centered and shows a great amount of wear and tear. The name sestertius means "two and one half", referring to its nominal value of two and a half asses (a bronze Roman coin, singular as), a value that was useful for commerce because it was one quarter of a denarius, a coin worth ten asses.

AE Follis of Constantius II
Subject
The topic of the resource
money; coins (money)
Description
An account of the resource
Two soldiers are confronting each other while holding a spear in their outer hand and a shield with the other. There is a "standard" between them, usually a pennant, flag, or banner strung to a pole representing a calvary unit for the kingdom the soldiers are fighting for. Constantius II separated the empire with his brothers, by taking Thrace, Macedonia, Greece, Asia, and Egypt, located in the east, for himself. This is a coin during Constantius II’s rule because the letters "IVN" or “JUN” are engraved meaning “junior.” Furthermore, the coin also contains the letters “NOBC” engraved meaning “Noble Caesar,” or “son”; helping identify the date range of this coin because the ones produced after the death of Constantine the Great in 336 excluded “Caesar” in the title for “Augustus” (Two Standards). The Romans used the word "Caesar" instead of “prince” to mean the “heir” of the empire.
