Juno Sospita (pictured on the obverse) was a goddess of fertility who protected women. The obverse shows the common depiction of Juno wearing a goatskin cloak. The reverse side of the coin shows a griffin and below a sandal which is symbolic of the trade-guilds. A griffin has the body, tail, and legs of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle, they are apotropaic and guard treasure and priceless possessions. Underneath the griffin and sandal the letters “L. PAPI” appear and refer to L. Papius.
