Title
AR Denarius of Tiberius
Subject
money; coins (money)
Description
Shown on the obverse side of the coin is Tiberius. On the reverse side is Tiberius's mother, Livia. Tiberius is pictured with a crown that represents power. Livia also had much power within Rome. Since there were limited women of power, Livia's status is striking. Tiberius became emperor because Livia was married to Augustus. Augustus died with no biological heirs, leaving his stepson Tiberius in power. On the reverse side around Livia's image are the words Pontif Maxium, referring to Tiberius's role as Pontifex Maximus, or High Priest.
