Dublin Core

Title

Denarius of L. Philippus

Subject

money; coins (money)

Description

The obverse side features a portrait of King Philip V of Macedon, in a royal helmet adorned with jewels and goat horns. On the reverse, an equestrian statue whose rider carries a laurel branch—symbolizing triumph—rests above the inscription L. PHILIPPVS X, or L. Philippus, a Roman citizen of Macedonian descent. Minted in 112 BCE, this coin honors Roman connections to Macedonian lineage, celebrating former Macedonian victories in forming alliances with Philip V’s Roman empire.
