Dublin Core

Title

AR Denarius of C. Mamilius Limetanus

Subject

money; coins (money)

Description

The obverse depicts the draped bust of Mercury, a god associated with commerce and also travel and journeys. He is wearing a petasus, a hat with a low crown and broad brim, along with a caduceus behind his shoulder. The reverse of this coin refers to the scene from Homer's Odyssey where Ulysses returns to his homeland and is instantly recognized by his dog Argus, despite being disguised as a beggar. This is a story about adventure, royalty, the struggle of good and evil and most of all a classic tale of a devoted war hero that most Romans at the time would have been familiar with.
