On the obverse side of this coin, it shows the Roman god Mars. Mars is the God of war and the son of Jupiter and Juno. He is the second most important God behind Jupiter. Mars is usually depicted with a war-related item when he is on a coin. On this coin, he is wearing a helmet. Emperors put Mars on their coins in hope of success in all of their battles.

The reverse side of the coin has a she-wolf from the tale of Romulus and Remus. This is on the coin because it represents the founding of Rome. The she-wolf found Romulus and Remus in a river basket. She took care of them and suckled them until they were found by a shepherd and his wife. Romulus and Remus went on to start the city of Rome. Also, it is said that Mars is the father of the two.
